3 Steps to Changing Your Address After You Move

July 10, 2024

Changing your address after a move is a crucial step to ensure you continue to receive your mail and avoid any disruptions. At CT Moving & Storage, we aim to make every aspect of your move seamless. Here’s a simple guide to changing your address in three easy steps.

1. Notify the Post Office

Start with the United States Postal Service (USPS):

  • Online Change of Address: Visit the USPS website and fill out the online form. There is a small fee for identity verification purposes.
  • In-Person: Alternatively, you can visit your local post office and request a Mover’s Guide packet. Fill out the PS Form 3575 included in the packet and hand it to a postal worker.

Once you’ve submitted the change of address form, USPS will forward your mail to your new address for up to a year, giving you ample time to update your information with other organizations.

2. Update Key Contacts and Services

Make a list of essential contacts and services that need your new address:

  • Utilities: Contact your utility providers (electric, water, gas, internet) to update your address and ensure services are transferred or canceled as needed.
  • Financial Institutions: Notify your bank, credit card companies, loan providers, and investment firms to update your billing and mailing address.
  • Government Agencies: Update your address with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for your driver's license and vehicle registration. Also, inform the IRS to avoid any tax-related issues.
  • Insurance Providers: Contact your health, auto, home, and any other insurance providers to update your address and ensure continuous coverage.
  • Employers and Schools: Let your employer and any educational institutions know about your move.

3. Inform Friends and Family

Don’t forget to share your new address with those who matter most:

  • Friends and Family: Send a quick text, email, or even a traditional moving announcement card to inform your loved ones of your new address.
  • Subscription Services: Update your address with any subscription services you use, such as magazines, meal kits, and online shopping accounts.
