5 Environmentally-Friendly Tips When Packing For Your Move

October 5, 2021

Packing up an entire apartment or house involves a lot of packing material and boxes. So, how can you move in an environmentally-friendly manner? We've rounded up five tips to make your move easier on the environment.

Reuse, Recycle, and Remove

Moving is not only time-consuming and stressful, but expensive as well. These five green moving tips will not only help save the environment, but they'll save you some green, too!

  1. Do you move — a lot? Save those moving boxes to use during your next move. Once flattened and bundled, they won't take up much storage space until you need them again. The best part? They're already labeled to help you keep track of your packing progress room by room!
  2. Save on bubble wrap by using towels, sheets, out-of-season clothes, etc. to cushion breakables. Since it all has to be packed and moved anyway, why not put it to work? Don't forget to fill suitcases, backpacks, and whatever other unconventional 'containers' you may have, too.
  3. Old newspapers also work well for wrapping up dishes and similar items. Just don't use it on anything the newsprint could damage if it rubs off. You don't want your favorite painting to arrive sporting an ad for tuna fish! Wads of newspaper are handy for filling gaps in between items. Remember, shifting often leads to chipping or cracking while on the road.
  4. Collect sturdy boxes from your favorite stores (with their permission, of course!) They were probably headed to the recycling bin, but you can make good use of them first. Reuse, then recycle.
  5. Purge your possessions. The less stuff you have, the smaller the environmental impact your move will have. Sort your belongings and get rid of anything you don't use regularly or love. Don't just throw away everything that doesn't make the cut! Sell or donate anything that is still in good shape and recycle whatever else you can.
