5 Moving Scams and How to Avoid Them

May 3, 2024

Moving to a new home should be an exciting journey, not a source of stress caused by unscrupulous scammers. Unfortunately, moving scams are all too common, leaving families without their belongings or facing unexpected fees. At CT Moving and Storage, we believe in transparency and integrity, so we've compiled some common moving scams and tips on how to avoid them.

1. Low-Ball Estimates

One of the most common scams involves movers offering suspiciously low estimates, then drastically increasing the price once they have possession of your belongings. Often, these scammers demand the new, higher payment before releasing your items.

How to Avoid: Always get at least three different in-home estimates from reputable companies. Be wary of any quote that is significantly lower than others.

2. Hostage Loads

In this alarming scam, the moving company loads your belongings onto their truck and then refuses to unload them or deliver them to the new address unless you pay a much higher price than previously agreed.

How to Avoid: Before hiring a mover, check their reputation on reliable review sites, confirm they are licensed, and ensure they have a local address and marked trucks. Never sign a blank or incomplete contract.

3. Deposit Scams

Some dishonest movers might ask for a large deposit before the moving day and then disappear with your money, never to be seen again.

How to Avoid: Choose a moving company that requires a small or no deposit before moving day. Paying with a credit card can also offer an additional layer of protection against fraud.

4. Phantom Delivery

Scammers may claim that your belongings are on their way and demand more money for their delivery, which never happens.

How to Avoid: Use a moving company that provides tracking information and a detailed inventory of items being moved. Ask for a contract that includes delivery dates and penalties for non-compliance.

5. Insurance Frauds

Some movers might offer insurance that turns out to be inadequate or nonexistent. If something goes wrong, they might not cover the damage or loss as expected.

How to Avoid: Ensure the moving company offers legitimate insurance. Ask for their policy details and verify them independently. Consider purchasing additional moving insurance from a reputable third-party provider.
