5 Things to Consider When Picking a New Place to Live

August 25, 2021

Moving to a new place can be an exciting time. A new job. A new place to explore. All of the food, festivities and people that come along with it. Whatever reason one has for moving, a great deal can go into choosing a new home, or even a new city. So here are a few key things to consider when looking for a new place to live.

Cost of Living

In choosing a new city, or even just a new neighborhood, cost will always be one of the most important factors. It is important when moving to compare the cost of living in your potential new home versus where you live now. For example, the cost of living in San Francisco, California is significantly higher than it is in Memphis, Tennessee. Using a cost of living calculator can be a useful tool in making these determinations. At the very least, it is something that should be researched ahead of time.

Commute Time

Much has changed in the last year. Many people work from home on a permanent basis. Or, at the very least, office life isn't as essential as it once was. Be that as it may, many people still have a daily commute to work. As such, factoring in a commute when selecting a new home is crucial. Increasing your commute from 15 minutes to an hour daily comes at a cost. Be sure to research what your commute will look like before making any big decisions on a move.

Weather

This one is pretty simple but no less important. Always keep in mind what the weather will look like in a new city. Do you live somewhere warm? Wisconsin might be a bit of a shock. Do you dislike the rain? Seattle might not be the way to go. Doing some research on the climate of a place you are considering moving to is key. Things to keep an eye on...

  • How often does it rain?
  • What is the average temperature annually?
  • Does it snow there?
  • Are extreme weather events common?

Nightlife and Social Activities

Everyone's needs vary but, generally speaking, social activities are an important part of day-to-day life. Cities vary greatly in terms of nightlife and other activities that are offered. What kind of food does a city have? Is there a lot of live music? Are there a lot of hiking trails? Are there a lot of other people in your age bracket living there? These are all things to look for when seeking out a new place to live that suits your social needs.

Schools

Last, but most certainly not least, the importance of having good schools nearby is paramount. For families, the quality of schools in a city or neighborhood can be a make or break point of emphasis. This is not an area many people are willing to compromise on if they have any say in the matter. Be sure to research the schools in your prospective new home thoroughly before committing to anything.
