7 Most Common Reasons People Decide to Move

July 9, 2021

From a desire to upgrade your living space to a job transfer, people have a lot of reasons for packing up and setting out for a new home. Moving may come out of necessity or because someone is living out their dreams. Either way, it's usually a pretty major event in someone's life and most people don't take on the change it lightly. It's stressful, time-consuming, and expensive. Let's explore 7 of the most common reasons people move.

Reasons to Make a Move

Average Americans will move just over 11 times in their lifetime. Why?

  1. "My job made me do it!" Yes, job relocations are one of the biggest reasons for making a move.
  2. Getting married (or divorced) means at least one person will have to move.
  3. The size of home needed for a family often goes up and then down as the size of the family changes.
  4. Renters are frequently looking for a home of their own.
  5. People may want to upgrade to a better living space or a better neighborhood as their financial situation improves.
  6. Retirees often want a warmer climate or the quiet peacefulness of a retirement community.
  7. Fiddle-footed people are always trying out a new neighborhood, town, state, or even a new country.

Local or Long Distance?

More than half of all moves are local and most of those local moves are because of housing needs, preferred school districts, or a change in family circumstances.

Long-distance moves, on the other hand, are less likely to be related to housing. The top reasons for longer moves are:

  • Job transfer
  • Family nearby
  • A more inviting city or state
  • A more favorable climate
