Preparing Your Storage Unit for the Big Move

October 21, 2021

When the date of your big move is approaching, you want to make sure you've done all you can to prepare so that you're moving-day-ready. Moving can be stressful in and of itself, making it that much easier to become overwhelmed with tasks or overlook certain things that need to be done. If you're reading this article, let this be your reminder to prepare your storage unit for moving day!

Take Inventory of Your Storage Unit

Whether you're moving across town or across the country, it's often necessary to relocate your storage unit to a new facility that will be close to your new home and convenient to access. Since you will need to pack up and move what's in your storage unit, this is the perfect time to take inventory of your belongings. What things do you need to pack onto the moving truck? And what is it time to let go of so that you don't overcrowd your new storage space with things you no longer need?

Make an inventory list as you go through your storage unit, and categorize everything into one of the following categories:

  • Things you need to pack and move
  • Things you can give to friends or family
  • Things you can donate to a local thrift store or charity
  • Things you can sell prior to your move
  • Things you need to throw away or recycle

Once you have a clear picture of what you need to do with everything in your storage unit, it'll be that much easier to spring into action and get things ready for moving day.

Bring in the Professionals

You don't need to stretch yourself thin on moving day by trying to do everything on your own. Hiring professional help for some of the tasks can save you a ton of time and avoid a lot of unnecessary stress.

If you wind up with a lot of bulky items in your storage unit that you no longer need, such as old furniture, mattresses, appliances, or simply a lot of boxes containing smaller items you need to get rid of, you can hire a junk removal service to come haul all of those things away for you.

For everything you do want to keep, hiring professional movers can speed up the process a great deal by taking the packing, loading, moving, and unloading off of your plate.
