Protecting Your Floors During a Move

August 5, 2021

If you're preparing to move, you're probably feeling the stress already. There are so many things to think about, and it's easy to forget about the little things, like your floors, but this small mistake can cause large problems. Read on for some tips on how to protect your floors during your move.

Why Is Protecting the Floor so Important?

Scratching the floor of a new house is painful for any new homeowner because that's a mistake you'll have to live with for a long time, but scratching the old floor can cause problems too. You may not have to live with it, but the buyer could complain, demand compensation, or, in the worst-case scenario, back out of the sale altogether. With everything else going on, that's a major headache you don't want to deal with.

So What Can You Do?

Here are a few things you can do to reduce the chances of messing up your floor, whether it's the old or the new.

  • Cover it with something. The easiest place to start is just putting something between the floor and everything else. There are products for sale that solve this problem specifically, but you can also use rugs or scrap cardboard. For a 'smarter not harder' approach, consider furniture sliders instead or, in addition.
  • Plan ahead. Try to work out ahead of time where everything is going in the new house and load the truck according to that plan. We know it's hard to imagine all of your things in an empty space, but the less furniture gets shuffled around, the fewer chances it has to ruin everything.
  • Watch the weather. A little dirt never hurt anyone, but salt or excessive moisture can do more damage than any piece of furniture if it's allowed into the house. Pair a heavy couch with a few bits of salt and you're in for a bad time.
  • Be careful. This may seem simple, but a little care can go a long way. Don't drag anything if you can help it. Make sure you have plenty of help so you don't risk dropping heavy things. Taking a minute to catch your breath and think before moving that bookshelf could save you hundreds of dollars.

Hire a Professional

You've taken all the precautions, but unfortunately, there's still a chance things could go south. Cardboard rips. No plan is perfect. The weather doesn't care if this is the only day you can move. The friends that come to help will never be as careful as you are. There's still a better solution. A professional moving company has the experience and knowledge necessary to make sure your floors stay beautiful. If you can, consider hiring someone to deal with it so that you don't have to.
