The Cost of Moving Within Connecticut

June 22, 2021

When you’re ready to look for your dream home in Connecticut, you may have one very important number in mind- the price range in which you’ll be searching for your new home. However, there are several other costs to consider when planning your move and searching for your perfect house. Don’t be blindsided by these often-overlooked expenses, and be sure to consider adding a little extra padding to your moving budget to help with these costs.

Cost of Living Around Connecticut

One factor Connecticut residents may not consider when moving to a different town or county is that the cost of living varies around the state. Although it’s true that many Connecticut residents pay the same state taxes, etc., there are several rates that vary between cities and towns.

One such number is the millage, or mill rate of a municipality. The millage rate is the number of dollars of tax assessed for each $1,000 of property value. So, a town with a mill rate of 10 will tax a resident $10 for every $1,000 of assessed value. Researching the mill rates of towns you may be interested in moving to is a great way to get a sense of what you’ll pay in local taxes.

If you’ve found a few houses in an area that you like, look into which services are included and which you will have to pay for, such as trash collection and water supply.

Every town is different, so be sure to do your research and determine which areas are most attractive to you.

Moving and Storage and Trucks, Oh My!

You probably know there is a cost to hiring professional movers, but have you considered the fees that might come along with packing, storing, and transporting your belongings?

  • Moving companies typically charge an hourly rate, which means the farther your new home is from your old one, the more your move will potentially cost.
  • If you have a lot of possessions and require more than a moving company’s standard amount of people or trucks, you may need to pay additional fees.
  • Finally, if the circumstances of your move require you to be out of your current home before your new home is ready, you may incur additional fees for storage.

Although every moving company and state is different, it’s wise to budget at least $1,000 for your moving company, understanding that the price will increase based on all of the factors above.

Ways To Save Money on Your Move

If you’re looking for ways to make your move more affordable, look no further! Here are a few tips that can keep some of that hard-earned cash in your wallet:

  • Move with the help of friends and family.
  • Don’t move stuff you don’t want! Sell, donate, and trash belongings that you don’t want to clutter up your new home.
  • Ask friends and family for spare boxes, old newspapers, and other packing materials that you can get for free.
  • If you hire professional movers, have everything disassembled, packed, and ready to go when they arrive.
  • Consider having professionals move only the larger/heavier items in your home.
  • Keep children and pets out of the way of movers so that they can work safely and efficiently.
  • Ensure that you can move right from one location to another to avoid paying storage fees.
  • Schedule your move for a weekday, as most moving services have a higher hourly rate on the weekends.
