Your Moving Checklist

June 25, 2021

Moving is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Taking everything you own, packing it up, moving it out, and setting it up in a new location is no easy task. If you're looking to make your move a little easier and less stressful, use our Moving Checklist to keep yourself on track, on time, and on budget:

Starting the Moving Process

The moving process starts long before the big day! As soon as you know you're moving, you can begin sorting and decluttering your belongings. Now is the time to set aside anything that should be trashed, given away, or donated. Decluttering before you start packing will save you some unnecessary work later. You may also want to research local moving companies and start collecting packing supplies like boxes, packing paper, and tape.

Preparing for Packing

To get ready for moving day, there are some steps you can take pretty early on to help move preparation along. These steps include:

  • Begin packing nonessential items
  • Create a layout of where items will be placed in your new home
  • Drain gasoline out of power/lawn equipment
  • Make arrangements for pets on moving day
  • Contact your utility company/Internet provider and alert them of the account change
  • Inform any key people/companies about your upcoming address change
  • Hire the right moving company for your needs

Leading Up to the Big Day

When the big move is only a few days away, you can start getting your preparation into overdrive. Here are some items to check off your list when the move is getting closer:

  • Vacuum area rugs/runners
  • Remove all pictures frames, mirrors, and wall hangings and pack them together
  • Make sure anything you don't want moved to the new location is gone
  • Ensure loose items are packed, labelled, and ready to go
  • Disconnect electronics and have cords wrapped up/secured

Checklist for Moving Day

The day of your move will be busy, bustling, and exciting. If you're working with a moving company, be sure to clear your driveway of any vehicles so that the moving truck can park in the best possible location. Clear all access points, stairs, hallways, and sidewalks for the safety of everyone assisting with the move. Make sure pets and small children are secured and not able to get underfoot. Then, get to work- or better yet, let the professionals handle it for you!
