10 of the Toughest Things to Move

August 15, 2022

Moving household items like dishes, furniture, and clothing is stressful enough. How would you like to have some of these notoriously difficult-to-move items on your moving day list? Most people's response when they see this list is an emphatic "No thanks!"

1. Exercise Equipment

Oomph! Just trying to move that exercise equipment is a workout in itself! Who knew that weights could be so... weighty?

2. Houseplants

They have brittle stems, easily-torn leaves, and are temperamental about temperature. Not to mention the possibility of catching pests (eww!) if left outside for any length of time. What could possibly go wrong when moving houseplants even locally?

3. Flat Screen TVs

What is large, heavy, and easily damaged? Why a flat screen TV, of course! These awkwardly shaped home essentials are also expensive to replace, so it takes plenty of help and lots of care when handling one.

4. Aquariums

What's so hard about moving an aquarium, you ask? Well, let's see...

  • Packing up the fish and plants so they'll survive the move.
  • Draining the water without making a mess.
  • Dealing with all that wet gravel.
  • Packing the wet, slippery decor.
  • Dealing with lights, filters, heaters, thermometers, yards of tubing, and all the other paraphernalia that keeps an aquarium going.
  • And then there's the aquarium itself...

Splish, splash, don't go crash!

5. Sharp Items

How many sharp items are in the average household? Kitchen knives, of course, but also scissors, saws, lawnmowers, and even the occasional Ninja sword collection. Pack carefully to avoid a nasty (and painful!) surprise upon unpacking.

6. Pianos

Hilariously disastrous piano moves are popular themes in cartoons and old Laurel & Hardy movies for a reason. Try moving one and you may just find out the reason behind the hilarity. Well, other people's hilarity at least!

7. Grandfather Clocks

It's as tall as a grandfather and as fragile as a great-great-grandfather. Not a good combination in something you're trying to move — especially out-of-state!

8. French Door Refrigerators

When moving day comes, you may be tempted to leave your prized French door refrigerator behind. These massive refrigerators are an equally massive headache when it's time to move them.

9. Pool Tables

There's a surprising amount of fine engineering under the expensive exterior of a pool table. Since it will almost certainly have to be disassembled to get it through the door, you'd better take plenty of photos to help you put it back together again. Otherwise, your pool playing days may be over!

10. Family Heirlooms

Old, fragile, and irreplaceable. These family treasures can range from pieces of furniture to family portraits to Victorian clothing and jewelry. Yikes! If you can't hand carry them to their new destination right away, climate-controlled storage is a must for delicate heirlooms.
