12 Fascinating Facts About Moving

June 15, 2022

Are you looking for a new hometown that better fits your lifestyle? Maybe your company has lined up a transfer or you could just need a change of scenery. Whatever the reason (and there are many), approximately 17% of Americans move each year. That's around 40 million Americans looking for a new home. No wonder moving companies are so busy!

12 Interesting Facts About Moving

  1. How many times have you moved so far in your life? The average is 11.7 times for a typical American.
  2. Every year, an average of 13 million children move.
  3. May through September are the most popular months for moving, with approximately half of all moves taking place in that 5-month period of generally nice weather.
  4. Friday is the most popular day for starting a move and pizza is the most popular bribe to get friends to help.
  5. Renters are more likely to move than homeowners, probably because it's easier to pack up an apartment than sell a house. On average, renters move every couple of years.
  6. A typical home includes at least 6,500 pounds worth of household goods. Better get some help with moving all that!
  7. More people move because of family than for work. Flying the nest, getting married (or divorced), having children, and downsizing are all common reasons for family-related moves.
  8. Military or other government job transfers are responsible for 18% of all moves.
  9. There are three types of moves: local, intrastate, and interstate. Local moves are usually less than 50 miles and might involve moving furniture within your home or to a new home across town. Intrastate moves occur within a state and interstate moves are across state lines.
  10. A significant portion (35%) of people stay within the same state when they move.
  11. There are more than 7,000 legal moving companies within the country, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding one in your area.
  12. When you consider time, gas, pizza and beverages, potential breakage, and possible chiropractor bills after you strain your back, a local moving company may cost less in the long run than a DIY move!
