Preparing for a Piano Move

If you have hired a professional moving company like CT Moving and Storage to move your piano into or around your residence or business, you may want to prepare beforehand. Below is a list of helpful tips to help you prepare before movers come to move your piano:

Put away any pets who can get in the way.

Make sure small children are confined to an area that isn’t where the move will be taking place.

Move any toys or small furniture that could be in the movers path.

Have a destination for the piano already chosen.

Make sure that space where you plan on putting the piano is cleaned, cleared, and ready for the piano to be there for a long duration.

The Piano Moving Process

Moving a piano is a delicate and complex task that requires special care and expertise. At CT Moving and Storage, we have a detailed process to ensure your piano is moved safely and efficiently, protecting it from damage. Here are the steps we take to move a piano:

Assessment and Planning: Our team first assesses the piano's size, type, and the layout of the moving environment. This helps us determine the best approach and equipment needed for the move.

Preparation: We prepare the piano by securing the lid and any moving parts to prevent damage during the move. Protective padding and blankets are used to cover the piano, safeguarding it from scratches and impacts.

Disassembly (if necessary): For larger pianos like grand pianos, we may need to disassemble certain parts, such as the legs and pedals. This allows for easier handling and transportation.

Specialized Equipment: We use specialized equipment like piano dollies, straps, and ramps to carefully lift and move the piano. Our team is trained to handle the weight and balance of the piano to ensure it remains stable throughout the process.

Loading: The piano is carefully loaded onto the moving truck using ramps and dollies. We secure it inside the truck to prevent any movement during transit.

Transportation: Our experienced drivers transport the piano to its new location, taking care to navigate any obstacles or difficult terrain.

Unloading and Reassembly: Upon arrival, we carefully unload the piano and reassemble any disassembled parts. We place the piano in its new location and perform a final check to ensure it is in perfect condition.

By following these detailed steps, CT Moving and Storage ensures your piano is moved with the utmost care and precision, providing you with peace of mind throughout the moving process.

Can I Just Move My Piano Myself?

Moving a piano yourself is not recommended due to the instrument's size, weight, and delicate nature. Pianos are incredibly heavy, often weighing between 300 and 1,200 pounds, making them difficult and dangerous to move without the proper equipment and expertise. Additionally, pianos have intricate internal mechanisms that can be easily damaged if not handled correctly. Without professional training, you risk injuring yourself or others, as well as causing costly damage to the piano and your property. Hiring professional movers, like those at CT Moving and Storage, ensures that your piano is moved safely and efficiently, protecting both the instrument and your well-being.

Start by packing heavier items on bottom working to lightest goods on top. Make sure to use plenty of packing paper, packing peanuts or foam to protect your goods. After one layer is packed, make another layered cushion of packing paper on top and start filling box again. This will create an extra layer of cushion inside your packed box. Make sure there are no empty spaces and that nothing is shifting around inside your box. Always pack your box all the way to the top (this will allow for a crush-free box). Once packed to top, fold flaps in and use 3 pieces of tape to ensure top will stay closed. Label your box properly.
