To Move or Not to Move: Which Things Will Make the Cut?

August 17, 2021

We've all been there, surrounded by boxes, books, and knick-knacks off every shelf, unsure what to put in what box. Unsure what you want to take with you. Wishing there was someone who could come in and do all the packing for you.

We can do that, but you need a place to start. You need something to help you organize your things and decide what will be moved. In this guide, we will give you tips on how to decide what to take with you to your new place and what needs to be left behind.

What Things Should Be Kept for Your New Home?

The first pile should be all the things you want to keep. This includes items and furniture that you know will be a good match in your new home or things of sentimental value. Examples of these items might be:

  • Family heirlooms like a grandfather clock or your grandmother's china
  • Maintenance equipment like lawnmowers and snowblowers
  • Dining room set

Don't worry about how heavy everything is. A professional mover can handle the task.

What things are beyond repair or need to be upgraded?

Next, make a pile of things you'd like to have in your new home, but the current version is broken or needs to be upgraded. Making this pile will help you remember to buy new versions of the items you left behind or purchase the latest version of what you need to upgrade. A few examples are:

  • Kitchen appliances
  • Electronics such as televisions and sound systems
  • An old phone

What things do you donate or recycle?

Lastly, there are the things that can be donated, recycled, or thrown away. These are things that you do not want or need anymore and can be parted with easily. Making this pile will help you make fewer trips to your local thrift store. For example:

  • Clothing
  • Books, DVDs and CDs
  • Extra glassware and dishes
